Trekking to Lake Pilato

The most symbolic destination of the Sibillini Mountains

Lake Pilato is the only natural lake in the Marche region, located at approximately 2,000 meters above sea level. It is an icon of our Sibillini Mountains Park. In 2026, it returned to life more than ever with a sudden snowfall just before mid-April, which then led to remarkable water levels that summer. This is the perfect opportunity to discover the “Chirocefalo” (Chirocephalus) in its natural habitat without disturbing it and, always with the utmost caution, without touching the water of this basin, which represents the only habitat for this tiny creature. During the walk, we can observe a series of breathtaking views, each more incredible than the last.

This hike will take you to Forca Viola (about 2,000 meters above sea level), offering stunning views of the Castelluccio di Norcia plateau (located at about 1,300 meters) and the Marche side with the Foce Valley. This first section of the trail (just over 6 km) takes us up about 600 meters, from which point we descend slightly, then climb again, descend again, and climb again… a series of secondary trails that will lead us to the place where Lake Pilato displays its full splendor. This valley has an “alpine” feel, with a very rocky landscape alternating with primeval grasslands.

We’ll depart at the time indicated on the excursion, usually shortly after 6:00 a.m. from the small village of Castelluccio di Norcia. We’ll ascend the trail (initially the official E17 trail) and then reach several crossroads that offer incredible panoramic views (as mentioned, but it’s truly special), finally reaching the highest point where, if all goes well, we’ll catch the first rays of sunlight.

After about 90-120 minutes, we’ll reach the actual lake valley, which we’ll reach after a walk of about another 5 km from the Forca di Presta pass. This is where the small “Marchesoni’s bat” (Chirocephalus marchesonii) lives.

After a break of about an hour, we will set off again, returning to the cars between 2 and 4 pm. Depending on our pace and the weather, we will return along the same route.

A special route: what to bring

Lake Pialto is one of the longest hikes I’ve done (not the longest), but it’s definitely a hike where you need to have excellent hiking shoes, plenty of water, a waterproof jacket, and plenty of energy to reach this mystical place. In the past, it was considered one of the most “mysterious and demonic” places, and legend has it that it houses the spirit of Pontius Pilate. This is a highly controversial area of โ€‹โ€‹the Sibillini Mountains.

During the walk, you’ll have breathtaking views at all times, and there’s cell phone coverage along much of the trail. The trail is only open from May to September. At other times, snow and ice may block the route.

Also discover the night hike to Monte Vettore or the day hike to Monte Vettore.

Features of the route

The chosen route is one of three access points to Lake Pilato, the longest but also the most scenic. The route from Forca di Presta is certainly shorter (about half the length) but has an exposed section. The route from Foce is the most popular but lacks the spectacular views from Castelluccio. The three routes (one way) are approximately 11 km from Castelluccio, approximately 6 km from Forca di Presta, and approximately 8 km from Foce.

Total altitude difference approximately 900m (approximately 700m uphill on the way there, approximately 180m downhill on the way there and then vice versa on the way back)

Walking time approximately 7 hours (excluding breaks)

The hike is suitable for people in good physical shape with extensive hiking experience. Suitable mountain clothing is recommended, and HIKING SHOES ARE ESSENTIAL. It’s also mandatory to bring a backpack with water and snacks. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a waterproof jacket are also recommended. You can read what you need to bring on the hike here.

Equipment and materials necessary to carry out the activities

Each participant must have at least one liter of water with them

We will all have to wear trekking boots, much of the route runs along the white path and in some places it is possible to find muddy areas. If it is winter it is best that they are high shoes with ankle coverage. It is not possible to take the walk with trainers/tennis/sneakers.

Also necessary for variable situations (for all daytime excursions, even in winter with snowshoes): sunglasses, hat and windbreaker suitable for rain.

In winter it is normal to have long trousers, but even in summer it is good to use long trousers because, in the most impervious parts of the route, we can encounter tall grass and having long trousers will allow us to better protect our legs also from possible thorns or insects.

From May to September included, always bring a sunscreen with you to prevent sunburn.

To better remember the day, a good camera to immortalize the environment around us is highly recommended.
