Winter Hiking: Hiking Materials for October to April

For all excursions between October and April I recommend bringing material suitable for the coldest and rainiest period.

In case of snowshoeing, I STILL ADVISE THE USE OF AFTER SKI PRODUCTS.

What is always essential? You can find it below.

  • trekking shoes, strictly with sculpted soles suitable for frozen and muddy terrain. If the excursion is not of tourist level (that is, if it lasts more than 90 minutes) it is almost essential that the shoes have the ankle covered. This detail is important to help the foot during hiking, prevent accidents and have greater support when walking, even on uneven terrain. I remind you that interrupting the excursion due to a ‘simple’ ankle sprain can have incredible consequences in the mountains.
  • a pair of waterproof trousers is also indispensable, usually you don’t need particularly warm trousers because ‘moving’ gets you warm
  • a technical (breathable) underwear shirt is perfect for winter activities, it tends not to retain liquids excessively and therefore is very easy to dry in case of sweat
  • a wool or fleece sweatshirt is ok to use as a mid layer
  • a winter windbreaker or down jacket and a protective ‘shell’ are perfect for cold winter days, especially when it’s windy. Obviously if it’s waterproof you can avoid bringing a small k-way.
  • gloves, a neck warmer and a hat help you complete the winter hiker’s ‘kit’.
  • a water bottle with at least 1/2 liter of water
  • a small snack (dried fruit is also perfect)

What to add?

  • sun cream: even in winter it can be an excellent protection for the skin
  • sunglasses, very useful when hiking in the mountains, when the sun and wind can create visibility problems even in winter
  • a thermos of hot drinks such as tea or hot chocolate to warm up during the break
  • a backpack where you can store everything (also so you can put a spare change or a snack in it)

In the case of snowshoeing organized by Faccio Tardi (if you have booked the activity) the SNOWSHOES are already included (the cost for the winter snow excursion for adults is 20 euros per person for half a day and with 25 euros they are included including snowshoes), and trekking poles are always included in all activities (except for specific agreements).

What to bring in general on excursions?

Safety must be our biggest concern and, although there are different situations in every season, I invite you to always check ‘what to bring’:
