How the Flowering Works in Castelluccio di Norcia

The flowering of Castelluccio di Norcia is one of the most fascinating natural spectacles in the Sibillini Mountains. Every year, the Pian Grande is awash with color thanks to the cultivated fields and wildflowers, transforming the plateau into a vast natural mosaic. To fully experience this phenomenon, you can join a guided tour led by a guide from the Sibillini Mountains National Park.

Activities are divided into different levels: from simple walks suitable for everyone to longer, more scenic hikes for more experienced walkers. This way, everyone can choose the experience best suited to their abilities and the blooming season.

There are free dates for each activity and, upon request, CUSTOM TOURS can also be arranged (if you wish to book an exclusive guide).

Walks in the lentil bloom (June – July)

TOURIST activity lasting approximately 1.5-2 hours.

Castelluccio di Norcia’s famous lentil blooms occur exclusively between June and July. During this time, the cultivated fields of Pian Grande create their famous mosaic of colors. The walks are easy and suitable for everyone, including families with children. The trails are flat and on very easy dirt roads, some sections even accessible with a stroller. Comfortable walking shoes are sufficient.

Panoramic excursions to see the lentil blossoms (June – July)

Activities for hikers (even beginners)

These hikes allow you to observe the lentil blooms from above, with splendid views of the Pian Grande di Castelluccio. The trail is approximately 8–10 km long with an elevation gain of about 300 meters. It’s therefore a true mountain hike, suitable for those accustomed to hiking. Hiking shoes with lugged soles and a minimum level of physical fitness are required for the hike.

Pian Grande crossing (long hike)

A challenging outing for anyone who wants to spend a day walking!

For more experienced hikers, there’s also the complete Pian Grande crossing, a hike of about 24 km that traverses the entire plateau (from above in the morning and from below in the afternoon). This is an immersive way to experience the lentil blooms, amidst the mountain peaks and valleys. This activity requires good physical endurance, a steady pace, and appropriate hiking gear (total elevation gain only 600 m).

Excursions for wildflowers (April – May)

A different kind of activity. For those who don’t want crowds, for those who want to experience a different kind of blossoming.

Between late April and May, the Pian Grande offers a spectacle different from the famous summer flowering: the spontaneous flowering of the mountain meadows (about 8-9 km). During this time, wildflowers such as violets, primroses, tulips, daffodils, and buttercups appear. The colors vary from day to day, unevenly across the meadows. This is a lesser-known flowering season, highly evocative for those who love to observe!
